STEM

STEM at St. Patrick’s De La Salle

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—encourages our pupils to investigate, create and solve problems through practical activities, discussion and teamwork.

Mathematics

We teach the new Primary Mathematics Curriculum (PMC), making maths active, enjoyable and meaningful. Every class uses a maths journal, following a consistent approach throughout the school. Each lesson includes:

  • Maths Eyes: noticing maths in the world around us.
  • Maths Talk: sharing ideas and explaining our thinking.
  • Maths Action: exploring concepts through practical activities and problem-solving.

Our wide range of new resources supports hands-on learning. Different ways of thinking are encouraged, and pupils are given time to explain their strategies and learn from one another.

We use Busy at Maths alongside the Busy at Maths Home–School Links (HSL) books, so homework reinforces the learning covered in class that day.

Science, Technology and Engineering

We cover the primary Science curriculum through experiments and investigations that encourage pupils to question, predict, observe and discuss their findings.

Our STEM boxes provide resources for practical building and design challenges. LEGO Education SPIKE allows pupils to build and programme models, while our Chromebooks and tablets support coding and digital learning.

Across STEM, pupils work together to plan, test and improve their ideas, developing creativity, confidence and perseverance.
